Deep Bright Lights

Today is Deepavali- the festival of lights, the holiest of Hindu holidays. Metaphorically speaking, it’s the day when darkness surrendered to the light of the universe. The triumph of DHARMA, righteousness in the face of privation. It’s a celebration of peace and homecoming, the return of the prodigal son, and the consecration of family. The religious aspect is just as significant to me as the social, for I believe in a higher cause. I believe that a man’s relationship with his God is not for public debate or ridicule. The spiritual connection, when experienced, can neither be disputed nor explained. It simply is. Perhaps, this is why I have such a hard time with organized religion with its rules and agendas. We are all the same in the eyes of the divine, naked as the newborn, translucent like a star. There is no room for any judgment. Only love.

As I prepare a mental inventory of my life, I’m filled with gratitude for so many of life’s little blessings. Sure, I may sound like a broken record, but a couple of years ago I couldn’t grasp this, so let me to soak it in. I think after periods of intense personal transformation, the mind, in order to cope, tricks you into believing that time has frozen over… which maybe is the feeling of being numb or stuck in a bubble… but, of course time never stops, moving ever so constantly, and soon you catch yourself staring at this new photograph- a better version of your older self, complex and multifaceted in ways that make you interesting, unique, yet honest and simply wholesome. You suddenly can’t escape the light. It is everywhere, enveloping you like a warm, cozy blanket; hugging you like a mother’s embrace, drowning you in all its glorious hues.

People are like stained – glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. –Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Don’t give up on the light inside your heart. Let it shine! Celebrate it; protect and guard it with an obsession! Let it radiate from you, twinkling in your eyes, flashing in your heart and warming through your soul. For, as long you have the spark that ignites the fire of life, everything will be A-okay! 😉 It’s the secret of life and my truth!
